The Beat Drop

Music Therapy for Young People

The Beat Drop provides specialist Music Therapy for children and young people who may struggle to engage with traditional forms of support.

Music Therapy is a form of psychotherapy delivered through music by a HCPC-registered Music Therapist. While music is the medium, the therapeutic relationship is at the heart of every session, providing a safe and supportive space where young people can explore thoughts, feelings and experiences at their own pace.

Many of the young people we work with communicate through behaviour rather than words. Some feel overwhelmed by school, struggle with relationships, shut down when emotions become too difficult, or find it hard to express themselves verbally.

Music can offer another way of being heard.

At the heart of The Beat Drop is the belief that every young person deserves to feel seen, heard and understood. As the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott wrote, “When I look, I am seen, so I exist.” Feeling genuinely recognised within a safe therapeutic relationship can be the beginning of meaningful change.

How We Work

Sessions are tailored to each young person’s individual needs and may take place one-to-one or in small therapeutic groups.

Music therapy is led by the young person and can include songwriting, rap, improvisation, listening to music, playing instruments or conversation. There is no expectation to be musical, and there is no right or wrong way to take part.

The Beat Drop works closely with schools, families and other professionals to ensure therapy complements the support already in place. Where appropriate, this may include working alongside SENDCOs, pastoral teams and external agencies to provide joined-up, person-centred care.

Sessions take place in a dedicated therapeutic space, agreed on a case-by-case basis, to ensure each young person feels safe, comfortable and able to engage in the therapeutic process.

Who We Support

The Beat Drop may be suitable for young people who:

  • struggle to communicate their feelings through words

  • shut down or become withdrawn when overwhelmed

  • experience anxiety or low mood

  • find school or relationships difficult to navigate

  • have experienced trauma, loss or attachment difficulties

  • communicate through behaviour rather than conversation

  • would benefit from a creative, relational approach to therapy.

If you would like to find out more about The Beat Drop or discuss whether Music Therapy could be the right support for a young person, please get in touch. We would be happy to arrange an informal conversation to explore how we may be able to help.
